{"id":150161,"date":"2025-12-05T10:12:10","date_gmt":"2025-12-05T15:12:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/?p=150161"},"modified":"2025-12-05T13:38:10","modified_gmt":"2025-12-05T18:38:10","slug":"ucf-alum-continues-growth-in-central-florida-after-graduation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/ucf-alum-continues-growth-in-central-florida-after-graduation\/","title":{"rendered":"UCF Alumnus Continues Growth in Central Florida After Graduation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/degree\/photonic-science-and-engineering-bspse\/\">Photonic science and engineering<\/a> alumnus<strong>\u00a0Alejandro\u00a0Lopez Zelaya \u201925<\/strong>\u00a0is proud that his\u00a0professional journey is continuing near the\u00a0community that\u00a0helped him\u00a0grow into\u00a0an emerging tech leader.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCentral Florida is my home, and I\u2019d like to be part of this community for as long as I\u202fcan,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>That plan fell into place when he landed\u202fa job at Lockheed Martin, a UCF <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/partnerships\/\">Pegasus Partner<\/a>, just weeks after graduating with his bachelor\u2019s degree in May.\u202fHis\u202fnew role\u202fas an electro-optical engineer associate in Lockheed Martin\u2019s Orlando Missiles and Fire Control division involves developing new imaging systems \u2014 a project that comes with its own challenges.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese systems make use of sensors specific to the mission,\u201d says Lopez-Zelaya, who is part of the 83% of career-ready UCF alumni who help fuel Florida\u2019s workforce. \u201cWe\u2019re concerned with how these sensors generate images, so we take the optics and other sources of noise into consideration.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s\u00a0exactly the skillset he honed during his time at\u00a0the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/college\/optics-photonics\/\">UCF College of Optics and Photonics<\/a> (CREOL). In addition to engineering and physics concepts, CREOL students learn the hands-on methods necessary to build optical and electro-optical systems \u2014 allowing them to contribute to technological developments that benefit humanity. Lopez Zelaya says he now puts that training to use every day.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomebody who doesn\u2019t have an optics and photonics background can\u2019t truly engage in these discussions,\u201d he says, \u201cBecause they don\u2019t understand the basics of what is actually happening in these systems.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lopez Zelaya\u2019s early career success is a continuation of the legacy he built during his\u00a0undergrad\u00a0years. Between classes that taught him MATLAB, display technology, image\u00a0processing\u00a0and semiconductor devices, he got involved as an undergraduate student research assistant. He also volunteered at Grace Medical Home, served as president of the IEEE Photonics Society student\u00a0chapter\u00a0and served on UCF\u2019s President\u2019s Leadership Council. His dedication to both professional development and his fellow students led to his induction into Order of Pegasus, the most prestigious award UCF bestows upon students.<\/p>\n<p>Lopez Zelaya says\u00a0UCF\u2019s\u00a0culture of creating lifelong learners prepared him well for his next steps at Lockheed Martin.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverybody is willing to learn something new about optics,\u201d he says, adding that\u00a0he\u2019s\u00a0often a source of\u00a0expertise\u00a0for questions that arise in the field.<\/p>\n<p>Lopez Zelaya\u2019s quick transition illustrates the value of the talent pipeline\u00a0CREOL supplies to the Central Florida photonics industry.\u00a0As a valued, longtime member of CREOL\u2019s Industrial Affiliates Program, Lockheed Martin\u2019s partnership has strengthened both the available opportunities for students and collaborative research efforts that aim to\u00a0benefit\u00a0the industry at large. And as a new\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/partnerships\/\">Pegasus Partner<\/a>\u00a0with UCF, Lockheed Martin\u2019s investment in the future will make impacts far beyond CREOL\u2019s walls,\u00a0building on\u00a0a longstanding and pragmatic focus on talent pipeline.<\/p>\n<p>With a 7-to-1 student-to-faculty ratio, CREOL\u2019s students are in a unique position to have a small-college experience at a big university. Lopez Zelaya says\u00a0he\u2019s\u00a0glad to have found a similar sense of community at\u202fLockheed Martin.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a misconception that new technologies mostly emerge from startups, but a lot of them are being developed here,\u201d he says. \u201cDevelopment is fun \u2014 taking\u202fa concept and making it into a working product.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lopez Zelaya says he\u2019s proud to put those skills to use in his hometown, and for a company that\u2019s leading the way in emerging optical technology \u2013 positively contributing to Central Florida\u2019s economy along the way.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s one of the best ways to make an impact here,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Alejandro Lopez Zelaya
