While students and alumni are used to seeing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/pegasus\/mighty-mascots\/\">athletics mascot Knightro<\/a> everywhere from sporting events to pool parties, there\u2019s another masked knight who only appears during football games.<\/p>\n<p>Established in 2001, this knight rides onto the field atop <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/pegasus\/back-in-the-day-pegasus-unleashed\/\">Pegasus, the winged horse<\/a>. The partnership between the knight and his trusted steed came about after members of the UCF Alma Mater Society, including <strong>Roger Pynn \u201973<\/strong> and <strong>Rick Walsh \u201977 \u201983MS<\/strong>, wanted to create a tradition for fans. They thought Pegasus needed to be better represented at games, and naturally a knight would be the one to ride him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt has achieved our goal of creating a tradition,\u201d says Pynn. \u201cPeople love seeing that horse and knight come out during the game.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And while this particular knight was retired in 2016, the legacy lives on. 女仆AV is working on redesigning the costume to better represent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/pegasus\/coach-scott-frost-first-ucf-football-game\/\">Scott Frost\u2019s era as head coach<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>[photo css_class=&#8221;knight-costume&#8221; id=&#8221;12705&#8243; title=&#8221;UCF-Knight-Costume-numbers&#8221; alt=&#8221;UCF Knight Suit&#8221;][\/photo]<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"gotham-bold text-uppercase\">Here are some fun facts about the original Pegasus\u2019 knight:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[divider][\/divider]<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"gotham-bold text-uppercase\">1. Stitched Into History<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Walt Disney World designed the original costume for the knight. Their sketches depicted two options, each with different visors for the helmet and placement of the Pegasus insignia. \u201cIt had to be designed in such a way that the person wearing the costume could both walk around and look natural while riding the horse,\u201d Walsh says.<\/p>\n<p>[divider][\/divider]<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"gotham-bold text-uppercase\">2. The Women Behind the Mask<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The original knights were members of the Equestrian Club at UCF, and all but one have been female students \u2014 a little-known secret, says<strong> Carla Cordoba \u201994 \u201900MBA<\/strong>, who has advised the Pegasus Mascot Team since 2001. \u201cAs with Knightro, nobody knows who\u2019s in the costume,\u201d she says. \u201cBut the riders were typically girls because they were small enough to fit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>[divider][\/divider]<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"gotham-bold text-uppercase\">3. Knight to the Rescue<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe objective in creating the costume was that we wanted our knight to have the same impact as a superhero,\u201d Pynn says. And, according to Walsh, they wanted to be able to make subtle improvements to the costume over the years, similar to the evolution of Batman\u2019s costume, so it could better reflect the times.<\/p>\n<p>[divider][\/divider]<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"gotham-bold text-uppercase\">4. A\u00a0Historic Ride<\/span><\/p>\n<p>On January 1, 2014, <strong>Amanda Gonzalez \u201914<\/strong> suited up for the last time as the knight during the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/pegasus\/fiesta-bowl\/\">Tostitos Fiesta Bowl<\/a> in Arizona. \u201cIt\u2019s a different experience seeing the world through just those little slits of your knight helmet,\u201d says Gonzalez. \u201cYou don\u2019t get to see everything, but it gives you the feeling that it\u2019s game day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>[divider][\/divider]<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"gotham-bold text-uppercase\">5. The Perfect Pair<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Cordoba emphasizes the importance of the unbreakable bond between the knight and Pegasus. The two were never intended to be seen separately; nor was the rider ever to be seen without a mask. Protecting the anonymity of the knights\u2019 identity was a way to foster tradition and represent 女仆AV in all its glory. \u201cIt\u2019s all those little details that make game day really special,\u201d she
