The immune system spots cancer by detecting unusual proteins called tumor antigens on a cell’s surface. Immune cells process these markers and show them to the rest of the immune system to trigger a response. UCF research has found that protein complexes such as CCT are far more common in cancer cells, which helps mark them as a threat.
